City announces one-time $2,000 compassionate grant for residents affected by flooding

HAMILTON, ON – The City of Hamilton recognizes the significant and ongoing impact that the July and August rainstorms and resulting flooding have had on affected residents, including damage to homes, personal property and essential household items.

Financial assistance available to eligible residents for flood-related costs not covered by insurance

To provide some financial assistance as residents navigate the costs associated with flood recovery, the City has established a one-time compassionate grant of up to $2,000 for eligible residents affected by flooding from one or more of these 2026 rainstorm events:

• July 21, 2026
• July 28, 2026
• August 2, 2026
• August 7, 2026

The grant is intended to help with eligible flood-related costs and expenses that were not covered by insurance, including costs associated with clean-up, repairs, essential household items, eligible emergency expenses, perishable food, tools or other items needed for an applicant's livelihood and insurance deductibles.

The City recognizes that flooding can result in significant and unexpected costs for residents, from damage to homes and personal belongings to the loss of essential household items. For residents facing these losses, the recovery process can take time and place additional financial pressure on households. While this one-time grant cannot address the full cost of flood-related damage, it is one tangible way the City is supporting eligible residents as they begin to recover.

Eligible applicants must meet the requirements approved by Council and provide documentation to support their eligible losses and expenses. Funding is available only for eligible costs that meet the program requirements.

Full information about eligibility, eligible and ineligible costs, application requirements and deadlines is available at hamilton.ca/compassionategrant. Applications will be administered by the City of Hamilton c/o Sedgwick Canada Inc. Applications must be received by the City c/o Sedgwick Canada Inc. within 120 calendar days of the applicable rainstorm event. The grant is being provided on compassionate grounds and does not constitute an admission of liability by the City of Hamilton.

The City knows that recovering from flooding takes time and can place significant financial and emotional pressure on residents and neighbourhoods. The City takes these impacts seriously and cares about the well-being of our community. This grant is one way we are supporting residents and neighbourhoods as they recover, while we continue to work to protect our community from flooding.
