Study Completion & Public Review Period for Main & Whitney (HD17A) Water Pumping Station EA

This area is currently supplied by the existing HD17A WPS (Main and Whitney), located at Main Street West and Whitney Avenue. The existing HD17A WPS is a below-grade facility, has exceeded its recommended useful life, and now requires substantial rehabilitation.

This study was carried out as a Schedule ‘B’ project in accordance with the MCEA, (2000, as amended February 2024). Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the process have been completed.

The preferred solution is to construct a new Water Pumping Station (WPS) at 1845 Main Street West, adjacent to the existing HD17A WPS. Once the new WPS is commissioned, the existing HD17A WPS will be decommissioned.

Public Review Period

The Municipal Class EA Environmental Study Report documenting the planning process undertaken will be available for public and agency review for a 45-day period from September 15 to October 30, 2026. The Environmental Study Report is available online at www.hamilton.ca/mainwhitneystationea

Requests should specify what kind of order is being requested (request for additional conditions or a request for an individual/comprehensive environmental assessment), how an order may prevent, mitigate, or remedy those potential adverse impacts on Aboriginal and treaty rights, and any information in support of the statements in the request. Requests must be received by the Minister of the Environment, Conservation and Parks by October 30, 2026. A copy of the request must also be sent to the City of Hamilton by email (see above for contact) or by mail, to the attention of the City’s Project Manager at 100 King Street West, 9th Floor, Hamilton, ON L8P 1A2. If there is no request received by October 30, 2026, the new Water Pumping Station will proceed to design and construction as presented in the planning documentation.
