Residents are invited to learn about upcoming changes to tactile walking surface indicators and see examples of the new design.
The City of Hamilton is updating the textured surfaces at curb ramps and sidewalk crossings.
These textured surfaces help people who are blind or have low vision stay safe when walking. They can feel the surface with their feet or a white cane. This helps them know when they are near a street or crossing point.
For several years, the City has used a stamped concrete design with raised lines. New provincial and Canadian standards now provide updated direction on how these surfaces should be built. As a result, many cities are moving to a newer, standard design.
The City is planning to move to a design with raised, truncated dome shapes. This design follows current rules and helps create safer and more consistent walking paths for people with vision loss.
At these sessions, residents can see examples of the new design, learn how it works and ask questions.
