Voter Eligibility
Are you eligible to vote in the 2026 Municipal Election?
You might be eligible to vote if you:
- Reside in the local municipality or are the owner or tenant of land here, or the spouse of an owner or tenant AND
- Are a Canadian citizen AND
- Are at least 18 years old AND
- Are not prohibited from voting by law.
You are prohibited from voting if you are:
- Serving a sentence of imprisonment in a penal or correctional institution;
- A corporation;
- Acting as executor or trustee or in any other representative capacity, except as a voting proxy; and
- Convicted of the corrupt practice described in subsection 90 (3) of the Municipal Elections Act 1996, as amended, if voting day in the current election is less than five years after voting day in the election in respect of which he or she was convicted.

Tenants interested in voting are encouraged to confirm, add, or update their information especially if they have moved since 2022.
Starting September 1, 2026, eligible voters who wish to be added to the voter’s list or who need to update their information can make an Application to Amend the Voters List. This can be done at the Office of the City Clerk at City Hall or at one of the City’s Municipal Service Centres from September 1, 2026 to October 24, 2026.
Eligible Electors can also have their name added to the Voters List at a poll location on any voting day.
No. Electors are required to show identification in person when applying to amend the voters list. Amendments must be made in person.

All eligible electors interested in voting should still check to ensure their information is accurate and up to date.
On a Municipal and School Board Election ballot you will see candidates for:
- Mayor AND
- 1 City Councilor in your ward (15 will be elected in total across all wards) AND
School Trustees, depending on your school support:
- Hamilton Wentworth District School Board OR
- Hamilton Wentworth Catholic District School Board OR
- 1 Conseil scolaire Viamonde OR
- 1 Conseil scolaire catholique MonAvenir
By default, your property taxes support your municipality's English public school board (in Hamilton, that’s the Hamilton Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB). However, you may be able to change the school board that your taxes support if you are interested.
As a property owner in Ontario, you are required to support a school system, even if you do not have children. If you wish to re-direct your school support from the default English-Public to a different board, your choices for boards include:
- English public
- French public
- English separate (Catholic)
- French separate (Catholic)
