Notice of Study Commencement & PIC 1 for Chedoke Creek Watershed Stormwater Retrofits and Lower Chedoke Creek Enhancement
In 2018, the City of Hamilton (City) discovered a system failure that resulted in the discharge of combined sewage into Chedoke Creek from 2014 to 2018. Upon discovery, the City stopped the discharge, reported the spill to the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation, and Parks (MECP), and began clean-up activities in the area. Since that time, the City has continued to work closely with the MECP in responding to Provincial Orders, undertaken remediation efforts (targeted dredging) in Lower Chedoke Creek, and identifed water quality improvement opportunities throughout the separated storm sewer areas of the Chedoke Creek watershed.
At present, the City has initiated two Municipal Class Environmental Assessments (Class EAs):
- Chedoke Creek Watershed Stormwater Retrofits Class EA: The purpose of this study is to identify solutions for the reduction of urban contaminants in the stormwater system that ultimately discharge to Cootes Paradise and Hamilton Harbour.
- Lower Chedoke Creek Enhancement Class EA: The purpose of this study is to
identify a preferred water quality enhancement strategy for Lower Chedoke Creek from King Street to Princess Point in Cootes Paradise.
