Ontario List of Reportable Diseases Expanded
Background
In response to reports of emerging tick-borne diseases and an increase in blacklegged tick populations across Ontario, the Ministry of Health has made amendments to Ontario regulation 135/18 (Designation of Diseases) and O. Reg. 569 (Reports) under the Health Protection and Promotion Act (HPPA) effective July 1, 2023. Three tickborne diseases have been added as Diseases of Public Health Significance:
- Anaplasmosis
- Babesiosis
- Powassan virus
These amendments will enhance surveillance of tick-borne illnesses in Ontario.
Action Required
- Please review the updated list of reportable diseases attached or by visiting www.hamilton.ca/infectiousdisease.
- Report all suspect or confirmed cases of Anaplasmosis, Babesiosis, and Powassan virus to Hamilton Public Health Services no later than the next business day.

Reporting Requirements
Anaplasmosis, Babesiosis, and Powassan virus are reportable to the Medical Officer of Health under the HPPA, R.S.O. 1990, c. H.7 effective July 1, 2023.
