Description of lobbying activity
The 272 Caroline St S Tenant Association was formed by the tenants of 272-280 Caroline St S, Hamilton and incorporated as a not-for-profit association. Our goals are to build community as neighbours and to advocate for our shared concerns as tenants: apartments in a good state of repair, affordable rents, and housing security. When we learned our landlord listed our apartment building for sale in December 2022, we worried we would face rent hikes and reno-victions if he were to sell to an investment company. We formed our association with the goal of purchasing the building and converting it to a not-for-profit rental housing co-operative. Our lobbying activities with City of Hamilton staff and councillors relate to affordable housing funding programs and policies that could assist us in this initiative, as well as future initiatives by other tenant groups and non-profit housing providers looking to do similar apartment building acquisitions.

Description of lobbying activity
“As McMaster Medical School students we are advocating for increased supports for persons experiencing homelessness in Hamilton. We ask that the Hamilton City Council collaborate with public health, healthcare organizations, and shelters to integrate and expand access to harm reduction resources and supervised consumption across the shelter system. In addition, we ask that Hamilton City Council cease the criminalization of activities associated with homelessness include many of those defined under the Public Nuisance bylaw (i.e loitering, public urination, public defecation, public intoxication) as well as sleeping rough and forming and living in encampments. Appropriate responses to these activities should involve individuals trained to interact with and support underserved populations, such as community housing workers, health workers, and mental health workers in acute crises. Lastly, we ask that the Hamilton City Council declare that public washrooms and hygiene facilities are essential services and subsequently increase availability of and access to public hygiene facilities. These measures aim to mitigate the harms of a lack of stable housing and improve health and social outcomes for individuals experiencing homelessness.”
